Experience

Junior Data Engineer

Data Engineering Bootcamp, Generation UK&I, London

I secured a place in the highly competitive Data Engineer programme offered by Generation UK&I in partnership with Infinity Works, which was an intense 12-week training programme designed to develop the skills needed to become a Data Engineer. It covers both programming concepts in Python, SQL, unix, AWS, Docker, ETL, data normalisation, data cleansing and data warehousing as well as soft skills, such as Growth Mindset, Persistence, Teamwork, Personal Responsibility and Future Orientation, which I’ve been implementing into my time at Generation as well as in my day to day living.

  • In the first six weeks of the programme I built a CLI application in Python for a pop-up cafe that allowed the user to perform CRUD operations on their data. A real life work environment was simulated where I would challenge myself every week such as the client changing the requirement for storing data in TXT initially, which then moved on to JSON, CSV and lastly into a MySQL database.
  • In the last six weeks of the programme, as a group of 5, we are tasked with building a fully scalable ETL pipeline to handle large volumes of transaction data for the business using AWS to leverage the application on the cloud and make use of the latest technologies. The idea was to help a national cafe chain understand their data better by performing ETL on their store transaction data, providing them with data visualisations and metrics to help them easily understand all of the data they are producing and use the information gathered to identify trends.
  • We focused on using Agile methodologies as a way of managing our project. This was done by breaking the project up into several smaller tasks on Trello, and having brief daily standup and retros, along with a comprehensive weekly retros to reflect on what went well and what we need to improve upon as a group.
  • I learned a lot of behavioural skills and mindsets needed to become a successful Data Engineer. I applied a growth mindset to all I did, to stay persistent - especially when tasks became more and more difficult, and to take personal responsibility for any shortcomings.
  • Teamwork was a very important skill that I practised in the tech environment, as Data Engineers tend to work in teams with members that have different roles. We read case studies, acted out role plays, and eventually worked in small teams for our final project.

    Interests

I have a creative mind and during my time in secondary school I won an award in the Furniture Category in Design Show Liverpool 2008, it was designed for people living in a large city and tight housing in mind. In my freetime, I enjoy entertainment such as watching movies and listening to all sorts of music, which can range from a classical piece to a rock anthem. I also enjoy reading novels and getting immersed in the stories being told which is why I particularly enjoy playing video games, as I get to control the character within a story. However, video games do not allow as much control of a character as simply playing a role playing tabletop game such as Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder, which I absolutely adore as I’m able to be who I want to be, where possibilities are endless and the only limitation is my imagination.
